3 ways to make the most of your kitchen space

If your kitchen is particularly small, or you're a keen cook who has more utensils than they know what to do with, you might be struggling to find space for all your pots, pans, and appliances. But, even when you don't have a lot of cupboard or countertop space to spare, there are some clever ways you can make the most of the room you do have.

Here, we're going to talk you through three ways you can maximise your kitchen space, so you have a clutter-free cooking area that's much easier to keep clean. Read on to learn more.

Keep your worktops clear

If you live in a small flat or studio, you likely don’t have as much countertop space as you might like. There’s no magic way to increase your worktop space, but you can maximise what you’ve already got by keeping your counters clear. This will make your cooking area look less cluttered and more spacious, and you’ll have more room for food prep, too.

The simplest way to do this is to keep as many of your appliances and kitchen gadgets off the worktop as possible. Any bulky appliances, like microwaves, can be integrating into your kitchen cabinetry: these sleek integrated styles from Belling will fit neatly into your cabinets, and will help to maximise worktop space while giving your kitchen a clean, streamlined look. Smaller gadgets and appliances, like toasters and coffee machines, can be stored on wall mounted shelves, and magnetic knife racks will stop bulky blocks from cluttering your work surface.

Make the most of the cupboard space you do have

If you're a keen cook with a small kitchen, struggling to fit all of your crockery, baking dishes, and utensils into your cupboards can be very frustrating. But there are some tricks and hacks that you can use to maximise your cupboard space and ensure that your bits and bobs have a place to go.

If your cupboard doors don't shut flush to the shelves inside, you could try attaching small hooks to the inside. These can then be used to store utensils that you don't have space for, or that could get lost in the chaos of your pots and pans. You're likely to find that adding more shelves to your cupboard will also help to keep things much tidier, as well as create more space for your supplies. If you live in rented accommodation and can't make permanent changes, shelving inserts can offer a great solution.

Get organised and de-clutter

If your kitchen cupboards and drawers are full to the brim and it’s making it tricky to find what you need, then there’s only one thing for it: a good clear out. Chances are, there’s at least a few kitchen gadgets you never use gathering dust at the back of the cupboard, so set aside some time to take stock of what you really need. If you’ve got stacks of old tins, herbs, and other pantry foods taking up valuable cupboard space, check through the use-by dates and throw out any that are past their best.

You don’t necessarily have to throw everything out, either: many of your unwanted kitchen goods can be recycled, donated, or re-used. Take a look at our handy guide to decluttering to learn more about what you can do with your surplus items.

Having a small kitchen can be frustrating — especially if your cupboards and countertops are overflowing with all the pans and utensils you need to cook. The tips we've outlined in this article will go a long way to helping you maximise your space to create a neat and tidy kitchen that's much easier to clean. And, you'll have no trouble making warm, home-cooked meals, no matter how small your space may be.
